| The Trashies |
Now Wave Oct. 17th 2006 |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Trashies are an awful lot like anal sex. There are some who find them incredibly disgusting and others who think they're the greatest thing in the world. People are often reluctant to give them a chance; but when they finally do, they tend to find the experience surprisingly enjoyable. If a fine line truly exists between flatulent idiocy and sick-minded genius, The Trashies paint it with their own urine out behind the trailer court. Any Trashies record is like a white trash rock opera of epic proportions, laden with enough perversion, dysfunction, degeneracy, illiteracy, and chemical abuse to fuel a thousand years of Springer reruns. Musically, Let It Be Trashed follows in the same vein as the band's great debut album, infusing the snot-nosed catchy punk of early G.G. with elements of surf-rock and eerie-sounding keyboards. Welcome to another day in the life of The Trashies -- a disappointing visit to the nude beach, acts of petty larceny, getting trashed and puking...It's never a dull moment! Includes the Billboard top ten smash "1/64th Native American". America's jobless, fast food eating, terminally wasted couch potatoes -- long ignored as a key market demographic -- finally have their generational spokespersons! Time's a wasting, my friends. Lube up and get in there! ---Lord Rutledge October 17, 2006 |

| Imagine a sort of lo-fi cross bewtween the SIMPLETONES, the ADOLSCENTS and the B-52's, throw in some bizarrely dorky lyrics and you might have an idea what the TRASHIES are all about. Of course, it's probably not all that easy to imagine what that combination might sound like. With songs about peeling one off at the beach and stealing somebody's new bicycle, you've got to love these guys. Or at least I do. They only pressed 300, so you mgith ave a tough time finding it. If you do go to the trouble, it'll be worth the effort. (KK) |

| Much like The Heartattacks will have the Teengenerate Jr. stigma attached to them forever, The Trashies will never get out from under the thumb of The Spits. These dudes do what the Wood Bros. (and perhaps even The Nix/Bedpans) did first (and better): write stupid songs about stupid shit, wear stupid clothes, make stoopid records, and roll around in the retard-punk ethic. The Trashies get a bit more trailer-park with their humor and...I don't know...just aren't as funny as the aforementioned. Not to say they aren't at all funny, but it's just that I've heard this joke a million times already. You know what is kinda funny? That "Nude Beach" actually sounds a lot like a B-52's song. Dickie Christgau gives this a C+, the plus being for cramming five songs on a seven-inch. Scum stats: 300 copies on swirly lavender vinyl.(RK) |

| The Dissimilars |
Now Wave Oct. 22nd 2006 |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Last October I reviewed the Dissimilars' second EP. One year later, I'm reviewing their first. It's never too late to acknowledge good music! Having now heard both records, I definitely have to place the Dissimilars in the "best bands that nobody ever talks about" category. Combining the no-fi production and raw catchiness of Supercharger with the ornery, drunken savagery of the Motards, these San Diegan miscreants do the garage-punk thing as well as any band going right now. And the record really was recorded in a garage! Snotty, crude, ferocious, and fun, this six-song EP demonstrates what most of us already know: that some of the best rock n' roll often derives from dirt-cheap recording and barely-competent musicianship. From the opening chords of "Black Cat", I'm bobbing my head like a motherfucker. This is some good shit! Nine out of ten bands could make music like this, and it would sound generic, tired, or just plain bad. But like their Northwestern counterparts the Fe Fi Fo Fums, the Dissimilars simply get it right. They slap it together and bash it out as if there were no other conceivable way to create music. The songs are deceptively good. The attitude is off-the-charts. And the playing is wild, fierce, and totally rock n' roll. What more could you possibly ask for? And why is this record not sold out yet? Get to it, kids! Chop chop! Buy, buy! ---Lord Rutledge October 22, 2006 |

| Dissimilars: Jimmy’s Room (Out of Order-7”) & Landmine (Plastic Idol-7”) I didn’t know this band when I ordered both of these 7”s, but since some reliable sources has recommended this shit I decided to give it a go and it turned out to be a good move. I guess we’re dealing here with the debut releases of these San Diego, CA residents and they earned themselves a nice spot on my turntable. “Jimmy’s Room” has no less than six cool tracks of snotty, unadulterated punkrawk action that got probably recorded straight in the rehearsal room with the cheapest rented gear that was available in town and it only suits tracks like “Statue Man” or “Santee Duplex” damn well, brining to mind the very first efforts of the Motards or the Persuaders going on the loose with the Disappointments. “Landmine” features another three songs that evoke the same drunk and addictive teenage kicks from my body. These tracks should be played on any current punk party you visit, otherwise, you’re hanging out at the wrong places! The Dissimilars forced their way into my record bins and they fit in really well! |

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Heavily distorted garage punk that sounds good, but the lyrics are hard to make out on these six songs. Great energy and sound, and the recording is awful and over modulated, but it matches the band’s pay-for-nothing DIY ethic. It sounds like a $17 recording, so well done, guys. (DM) |

| I saw these guys at their first out of town show ever at the Surley Wench Pub in Tucson and wasn't incredible impressed, but the were nice guys so I traded them for some of their records. It took me a while to actually get around to listening to this but I must say that this is a very strong debut. The Dissimilars play lo-fi, sloppy, beer splattered garage rock that's not spectacular but is certainly entertaining. (CM) |

| Batarang! (Nov-Dec 2005) |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Talkin’ about some pissed off two-chord punk! The Dissimilars appear to be a bunch of pillbopping boozehounds from San Diego who will chase away the few friends you still have, ruin your haircut, squeeze that frigid girlfriend of yours in the tits and ram a bottle of warm Jägermeister down your throat. They somehow also manage to produce some seriously raw and fucked up garagepunk mayhem like we’ ve become used from bands like The Reatards/Motards/Persuaders. I think as a release “Jimmy’s Room” stands out, but “Landmine” is the best song. If all this still makes sense to you, you should hunt down both these releases immediately. |

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I reviewed this band’s demo a while back and I said that I couldn’t wait for them to put out some vinyl. Now I don’t have to wait anymore, And, while it’s inexplicable lacking in Venom and Flag of Democracy riffs, it’s still great, fuzzy, bopping garage rock that sounds pretty much like all those great bands that came out of the Southwest in the mid-90’s like the Drags, the Inhalants and the Motards. It may seem like a disservice to compares them to so many other bands, but with this kind of stuff, there’s not really anything new. However, I am pretty burned out on the we-used-to- love-the-Infections-but-now-we-love-Sonic-Youth stuff and it’s awesome to know that bands are still playing this kind of simple, straightforward punk rock with those catchy guitar parts that we can whistle to ourselves while we clean the pool at the YMCA. And I hear they’re straight edge. -Josh |

| A band terminally at odds with their environment- in this case, the mellow and temperate climes of San Diego. Spare and ugly shenanigans from this four-piece that claims Jimmy the Worm and Nate Red among its ranks. Sonically, they’re a hyped-up blend of early REATARDS and snotty stuff like the early QUEERS or what have you. Six tracks of wind-up bedroom tapes that all sorta sound the same, but they’ve that elusive Quality X that says “keep” rather than “toss.” Tunes include “Black Cat”, “Statue Man”, “Human Target”, Santee Duplex”, Bury Me With My Record Collection” and “Monkey Farm” (being the best of the bunch). If you’ re looking for an illicit Memphis-style buzz right here in cosmopolitan California, then the DISSIMILARS could be your act. (JH) Jeff Heermann |

| Pocketful of Change (August 2005) |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Southern California, San Diego to be exact, has a new garage punk export- this 6-song ep is The Dissimilars’ debut as well as the first release on Out of Order Records. They are going for full-on authenticity too; it was recorded in one of the band member’s garages. It’s sloppy, sped up, and not too serious, but definitely a good time. Their sound is raw and fuzzy so it’s a good thing that it comes with a lyric sheet or else I wouldn’t know just how great a song “Bury Me With My Record Collection” really is. – Caryn |

| "Six-song debut EP from these San Diego fellas which is just brimming with fun-loving garage-punk. I guess I'm obligated to mention this band contains ex-Tie Red Nate, former member of one of the best bands to come from NYC in a long while. Anyway, this EP is a perfect blast of giddy juvenalia-infused punk, played in an actual garage (the EP's title refers to the garage living space of the singer where it was recorded), with equipment I am sure was covered with duct tape and spilled beer. I'd pick a favorite song, but they're all equally good and sloppy entertainment. "Bury Me With My Record Collection" contains the line "If you want me dead/please kill me on a Sunday/because Saturday's for rock and roll", which I think perfectly sums up the aesthetic at work here. Charming, a little bit goofy, and defintely worth a pick-up as a soundtrack for those spring time BBQ parties. It ain't gonna change your life, but will make it a little bit better. Scum stats: 500 on black vinyl, with handy and entertaining lyric sheet/insert." (RK) |
